OS Distribution Release NetBSD 10.1

NetBSD 10.1 is available as a netboot install.

This version of NetBSD will be supported by the The NetBSD Foundation until the next point release of the 10.x series.1

Benchmarks of NetBSD 10 show performance and scalability gains over NetBSD 9.x, especially on multiprocessor and multicore systems, for compute and filesystem-bound applications.

See the release notes for a summary of kernel and userspace changes.

Installation

Unlike the NetBSD 9.x series, NetBSD 10.x runs under hardware virtualization (HVM) and is not supported by Tornado VPS when running a paravirtual machine (PV). Users can convert their virtual machine from PV to HVM in the VPS console, using option #3 under the maintenance options menu (itself available as option #b from the main menu).

You can install NetBSD 10.1 via the VPS Console using option #6 (set bootloader, rescue mode, or netboot installer), followed by option #4 (Netboot installers) and selecting “NetBSD 10.1 64-bit”.

From there, return to the main menu and use option #2 (create/start, opens OOB console) to boot in to the netboot installer. The installation procedure can then be followed. A full console recording of the NetBSD 10.1 installation is shown here:

After the install is complete, use option #6 (set bootloader, rescue mode, or netboot installer) to boot from disk and reboot your virtual machine:
